54rd Maine Retired Skippers Race -- Aug. 20, 2000

Race Committee Report:

The race began at 1:00 PM as scheduled.  The wind was 11 to 14 kts. SE.  We hoisted the Alpha flag hoist for Course A and yellow scratch sheet wind speed 12 kts.  One boat started early, the other 37 boats started on time.

During the race, the wind at the committee boat gradually died and was calm for about 15 minutes before building again to 12 kts. and diminishing to 5 kts.

At the first mark off Turtle Head, the wind died quickly allowing Alamar to stretch the 29 minute head start her rating gave her and causing more than 10 boats to be stuck fighting current and unable to round for about half an hour until a very light wind filled in.  During this calm time 7 boats withdrew from the race.  The early starting boats sailed south to the 10 knot breeze that blew during the entire race at the second mark ending any chance for the last group of boats to move up in their finishing position.

As the lead boat approached the third mark (bell CH), there was insufficient time remaining to finish the course (considering the light wind at the mark off Turtle Head) before the time limit expired.  The Sierra flag was hoisted and the course shortened to 3 legs finishing at bell CH.  The first boat finished at 4:14 PM and the last boat finished at 6:22 PM.

The race format (a pursuit race with one large class) can not provide a fair race when wind conditions vary to this extreme.  The range of ratings results in the difference in starting times of approximately one third of the maximum time allowed for the race.  Tremendous differences in wind conditions will occur during that time.  In this race I added the elapsed time for the first 5 boats to start (slowest rated boats) and compared it to the last 5 boats to start (fastest rated boats).  The time was virtually the same indicating the difference in the wind conditions completely negated the difference in the speed of the boats.

I will analyze the data from this race (and fleet) during the next few weeks and send you recommended changes.

Committee Boat crew members Rita Poirier, Amy Moore, Leslie Stergeonberger (not sure of the spelling), Mickey Gast, Dick Gibson, Jon Johansen, and Derek Chase were excellent and I would be glad to serve with any of them again.
